I recently became aware of multiple projects regarding the spoofing of Nintendo Zones and distributing StreetPasses. Normally this isn't a problem for me, as our local McDs and Home Depot are also Nintendo Zones, but I found out that there are programs available for the Raspberry Pi that spoof a Nintendo Zone MAC address and can even rotate them periodically for maximum passes.

I have a Raspberry Pi 1st gen and a spare router. For the Pi, the question becomes whether or not I'm able to install the software onto it since most of the software is only for the RBP2. The router must support MAC spoofing, and I'm not sure if it does. More information on the project as I try to make progress, most of it now will be link dumps for information.

SpillPass is another RBP based solution, but supposedly this one is already workin on 1st gen hardware. Maybe I'll give this one a try instead.

I got my wireless dongle in today, but unfortunately it doesn't work.

Not recognized when plugged in, I tried on everything I had access to. Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 10, and the Raspberry Pi itself.

I guess there's not much to do except wait on the seller to respond, although I did find a list for other RT3070 chipset based wifi dongles.

The response from the seller BigLobster was prompt and honestly unexpected, he just refunded me for the product and told me to dispose of it. I HIGHLY appreciate this quick response and no-hassle solution. Thank you so much for this level of customer service! Please patronize his Ebay store if they have something you're looking for.

Now, onto the adapter itself. I cracked it open to see if it could be a possible easy fix.

Here's what it looks like inside. This is slightly frustrating for me, as the dongle could have been significantly smaller and more compact.

The pcb removed from the plastic shell. Don't mind the divots on the USB connector, that's from the screwdriver I used to separate the shell pieces.

Viewing the underside of the pcb. It's a lot more sparse than the topside

It is indeed running off of the Ralink RT3070L chipset, but as it's not working it is useless to me.

I measured the USB pins with a multimeter when it was plugged in, and the pcb was getting the 5v from the computer but for whatever reason the board wouldn't respond. I might try reflowing the chip if I have another (more important) project set up, but as for now it will be replaced.

Today I ordered another USB RT3070L based adapter, this time trying a Powerlink PL-H5DN-3070 off of Ebay for around the same price ($10). This one looks to be a lot larger, with an antenna attached. Now all I have to do is wait til it gets in...

As it turns out, right after I paid for the Powerlink wifi dongle, Ebay sent me a notification saying that another auction I was watching was ending. This one was for a Medialink MWN-USB150N adapter, and the bid was only at a little over a dollar. I thought to myself what the hell, and put a small maximum bid. A few minutes later and I got an email saying I won the item for a little over $5. Can't beat that, plus it was a regular sized dongle with internal antenna, and even came with a USB extender.

The seller sent it in the box, came with everything including the driver cd.

Very nice usb extender, so you can plug it into the back of your pc and insert the dongle only when you need it

Plugged it into the RBP and a minute later I hit my first pass.

It acts like a normal Nintendo Zone, so while I don't necessarily get full hits on all my games all the time, it averages 9 in Mii Plaza every time the device rotates.

Success! Spillpassv2 works on my RBPv1 Model B, and I am now able to access it at work where there are no other wireless networks around. As a happy side effect, I can use the network for my phone and laptop as well; the only side effect is that the network completely drops every time the device rotates the MAC address...no playing online for me.

Thank you gba_fan for the RBP, given to me so many years ago and it now has a purpose again. lol
