Okay well, Skidz' broken PS3 and my many Xbox 360's may be repaired in the very near future (start of 2010) so we debated what to do with them. I've always been interested in re-casing the 360 in something less likely to cause overheating problems, as well as a near-infinite scaling possibility to fit more systems in. Right now, I'm just planning on fitting the 360 and PS3 in the case, but there is a strong chance that we may also fit in an original Xbox and slim PS2 in there as well.

The main problem I have, other than the fact that I have to reflow both the PS3 and 360 first, is the power supply. If I can fix a blown 580W one that I have, that will be able to provide sufficient power for the 360 (25A on the 12v rail, 360 needs 16.5A) along with a shitload of amps @ 5v for...well, LED's. lol. However, after some research, it's found that a 360 typically pulls only 8A of current @ 12v, so I could possibly use some old guaranteed-working 280W PSU's I have laying around.

The PS3 is a 135W model (40gb) but the PSU should still be intact so I don't think we'll need to hack up a PC one.

Here are the 'stock' OEM PSU requirements for the systems:
Xbox: 12v @ 1.2A, 5v @ 13.2A, 3.3v @ 4.8A, 3vSB @ 45mA
Xbox 360: 12v @ 16.5A, 5vSB @ 1A
PStwo: 8.5v @ 5.65A
PS3: 12v @ 21.0A, 5.5v @ 900mA

This leads me to conclude that we should let the Sony systems use their existing power supplies, due to the difficult voltages they produce (8.5v? 5.5v?) and the overwhelming 12v rail requirement on the PS3. Also, I've heard stories about the Sony lasers not liking any voltage fluctuation related to third party power supplies.

More later, I'm sleepy.

So I just realized that I should transplant the motherboard from my silver Xbox into the PS360, since it has the Xecuter 3 CE modchip that supports the LCD I have...

Anyway, this project probably won't kick off til next year when I have the funds to buy the reflow station, but what we're doing now is making double sure the physical spec of the thing. Taking measurements, calculating power requirements, designing the case and what we should do to make it (more) awesome. I'm thinking LED's, and lots of em...or maybe CCFL's, a la El Diablo.

We dismantled the PS3 last night and found it to be rather inflexible as far as rearranging its components (Sony has a habit of making its consoles' power supplies mate with the boards with only hard connectors, no wires) but we will be taking out its monstrous fan so we'll have two extra amps (probably more) to play with when we redesign the cooling system.

I guess what we have to do now is research, what people have been doing when they modify their systems, and what has worked and what doesn't. Also, taking measurements of the consoles' components (mainly motherboards) will be important in the design phase. I'll probably end up CADding a drawing of the layout once we get something together. Ideally we'd have one person work on each 'piece' of the project, but it will probably end up being we all work on the project one piece at at time. I'll post up whatever reference images I get, but for now we just have to take measurements.

okay now that it's summer and I will have a bigger cashflow, this project should get restarted. First and foremost I have to reflow the PS3 though, the 360 I intended this project for is still working after a reflow a couple months ago.
